Apprenticeships

The Construction Industry offers an immense opportunity for someone wanting to make use of their creative mind and physical abilities to become a skilled craftsperson in one of our many trades. All our apprenticeship and training programs are committed to the proposition that there shall be no discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, or national origin regarding the selection for apprenticeship and training and shall be based upon qualifications alone.

Each craft has a Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, which consists of an equal number of labor and management representatives who conduct, monitor, and are responsible for the selection, training, and all affairs of the entire apprenticeship program.

Your training would require a wide and diverse range of skills and knowledge, as well as maturity and independence of judgment. You would have planned day-by-day, on-the- job training and experience under supervision, combined with technical studies in subjects related to the trade. Apprentices are also taught the proper use, care, and safe handling of the tools and equipment used in connection with their work.

Apprentices earn while they learn. The more you learn the more you earn. They are paid a percentage of a journeypersons wage to start and get increases at scheduled intervals. The apprentice, when working on the job, is a regular part of the work force who earns wages while acquiring important skills. Upon completion of their term of apprenticeship they are advanced to Journeyperson status with full rate of pay.

Apprenticeship training ranges from two to five years depending on the craft. Classes are usually one or two evenings a week and/or on weekends. One hundred and forty-four hours of related instructions are required each year. Classes are taught by competent instructors with many years of practical experience in the craft. Classroom work is required in subjects related to the trade as a complement to the on-the-job training.

Beyond Apprenticeships

Apprentices of today become the Journeypersons, foremen, superintendents, and contractors of tomorrow. Recognizing that fact, education and training becomes a career long process. Keeping pace with technology and safety is an essential ongoing process.

Each craft stays abreast of training needs for their journeypersons. Training is arranged and scheduled accordingly. In order to perform our work or to be in a position of leadership and lead our workers, we must stay current in the world of education and knowledge. It is a highly competitive world and we always want to be the most qualified.
